Prague Opera House and Classical Concerts in Prague

Trips to central Europe have been in vogue for a number of years. One of the most well-known is the triangle made up by the capital cities of the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. These three great cities – Prague, Vienna and Budapest – are united by a shared history, while also being very different from each other. They attract more and more visitors every year and are bound to surprise you with their beauty.

Whether you decide to embark on this wonderful tour or visit just one of the three, don’t miss out on the rich programme of cultural events and entertainments that are on offer in all three imperial cities. All of them are famous for their classical music, their operas and their concerts, as well as for other special events.

When we consider the first of these – Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and of the region of Bohemia, known for its world-famous crystal – we might picture a fairy-tale city dotted with many towers. Known as “the city of a hundred spires” or “the golden city”, among other descriptions, it will leave you with memories that retain the magic of this special place, especially if you wander around the old town when illuminated at dusk.

As well as its beautiful constructions and monuments – the Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Wenceslas Square and the Jewish Quarter, to name a few – we suggest that you enjoy the extensive programme of cultural and musical events which take place all year round.

One place of particular cultural interest is the stunning Prague State Opera. Some of the most well-known works of the operatic repertoire are performed here, such as Carmen by G. Bizet, La Traviata, Rigoletto and Nabucco by G. Verdi, Turandot and Madama Butterfly by G. Puccini, The Barber of Seville by G. Rossini, and The Magic Flute by W. A. Mozart, among others. Famous ballets, such as Swan Lake by P. I. Tchaikovsky, are also performed at this illustrious opera house.

As well as the Prague State Opera (Státní Opera Praha), other theatres and concert halls – such as the Hybernia Theatre – also offer mesmerising performances of opera and ballet.

In this county and its capital city – birthplace of composers of such stature as Antonín Dvořák, Leoš Janáček and Bedřich Smetana, among others, and where other maestros such as W. A. Mozart lived and premiered some of their music – you can enjoy fabulous classical music concerts. Works by some of the aforementioned composers, as well as those by A. Vivaldi, J. Pachelbel, J. S Bach and G. Gershwin, are performed by virtuoso musicians at the different concert halls, churches, synagogues and palaces, such as the Spanish Synagogue, Villa America, Municipal House, St Nicholas Church, St George’s Basilica and Lobkowicz Palace (both in the Prague Castle complex), the famous Rudolfinum Concert Hall, etc. In turn, the Estates Theatre presents Mozartissimo, with a programme dedicated to the composer from Salzburg. And, also in honour of Mozart, you will be able to enjoy the Dinner Concert Mozart, hosted at the Neo-Baroque Boccaccio Ballroom.

Other dinner options include the traditional Cabaret U Fleků – for a typical Czech dinner and a spectacular cabaret (as was frequent at the beginning of the 20th century) – or the Folklore Garden, where you will be able to enjoy dinner while dancers and musicians in traditional costumes present a show of Czech folklore and traditions.

If you want to add a romantic touch to your stay in Prague, you could always reserve a Jazz Boat River Cruise on the Moldova (Vltava) River – the perfect way to finish off the evening.

And don’t miss your opportunity to see a performance of Black Light Theatre. This is a typical form of theatre in the Czech Republic – in fact it originated here – and is worth seeing and experiencing for its uniqueness and originality. The illusions and creative tricks of light and shadow, the characters and objects that defy the laws of gravity, not to mention the ingenious choreography of the different shows (such as Afrikania, Black Box, Galaxia, Cabinet and Wow Show, among others) will leave you – like the Black Light Theatre itself – literally speechless.
